Shandong Taihao Petrochemical Co., Ltd. recognized that the only way to overcome these developmental bottlenecks was to extend its industrial chain and pivot toward the field of high-end new chemical materials. Leveraging its inherent technological and resource advantages in the oil refining sector, Taihao Petrochemical decided to invest in and construct a high-end new chemical materials project, aiming to establish an industrial structure characterized by a "refining head, chemical body, and high-end chemical tail."
Project Scope
Construction of an Aromatics Production Unit: Phase I of the project involved the investment and construction of an aromatics production unit with an annual capacity of 1 million tons. Utilizing naphtha—a byproduct of the company"s refining operations—as feedstock, the unit employs processes such as catalytic reforming and extraction to produce aromatic products including benzene, toluene, and xylene. As aromatics serve as critical raw materials for the production of high-end new chemical materials—such as polyesters, plastics, and rubber—the completion of this unit has filled a gap in Taihao Petrochemical"s capabilities within the field of aromatics production...The blank space provides ample raw material support for the subsequent production of high-end chemical products. Following the completion and commissioning of the high-end chemical new materials project, Taihao Petrochemical"s product structure underwent significant optimization; the share of high-end chemical products in its total output value rose from an initial 20% to over 50%.
